This lecture shifts how we qualify Black queer life through a well-being grounded by the erotic, relationships, socio-economic struggles, and freedom strivings. Through a Black queer feminist lens, I examine Black lesbians’ negative affective experiences caused by entrenched intersectional prejudice within gynecology in Brazil. I argue that Black lesbians pursue their bem-estar (or wellbeing, a term taken up by the women in the study) against intersectional intimate violence and that this pursuit of self-worth drives their resistance and abolitionist praxes toward social change, self-care, and communal action in overt and transformative ways. This ethnography rethinks medicalized genital injury discourses to center the unseen emotional and social trauma within gynecology and its impact upon these women’s strivings for sexual liberatory praxis.
