Social Determinants of Health Continuing Education

Friday, April 15, 2022 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Health educators are challenged with implementing effective teaching strategies for educating learners on social determinants of health (SDOH). Education on SDOH is necessary to ensure future healthcare providers have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to address all aspects affecting one’s health. Failure for healthcare providers to understand the relationships between SDOH and health can perpetuate the continuation of health disparities and inequities. The concept of SDOH should be threaded throughout the curricula and not solely exist within a course or addressed only in lecture. Health profession educators are uniquely positioned to implement a curricula that addresses SDOH and prepare future health professionals to be advocates for health equity.

This workshop will begin with a broad overview of the relationship between health equity, health inequities, health disparities, and social determinants of health. We will discuss evidence-based teaching strategies that promote health equity through the lens of SDOH. Various educational modalities (including simulation) will be reviewed to provide a holistic approach to incorporating SDOH into the curricula. Lastly, participants will engage in creating their own educational activity focused on SDOH.

At the end of this workshop, the participant will be able to:

1. Explain the relationship between health equity, health inequities, health disparities, and social determinants of health.

2. Identify evidence-based recommendations to provide a holistic approach to integrating SDOH into curricula.

3. Develop an experiential learning activity that promotes an understanding of SDOH and its impact on health.

4. Implement effective teaching strategies to educate health professions on SDOH.

5. Discuss exemplar models for integrating SDOH into healthcare education curricula.

4 nursing contact hours or 4 CME credits will be awarded to eligible attendees

Presented with generous funding support from the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation.
