Launched in 2017, the South Arts Southern Prize & State Fellows project supports some of the best contemporary art in the American South. This exhibition presents work from the nine 2021 fellowships recipients, one each from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, the South Arts region. An independent jury selected the nine state fellows, each receiving a $5,000 award. A second jury panel selected two finalists for the Southern Prize. South Carolina’s Fletcher Williams III was the runner-up, or Southern Prize Finalist, and received an additional $10,000; Florida’s Marielle Plaisir won the Southern Prize, receiving another $25,000.
The 2021 South Arts State Fellows are Tameca Cole (Alabama), Raheleh Filsoofi (Tennessee), Joyce Garner (Kentucky), Myra Greene (Georgia), Jewel Ham (North Carolina), Ming Ying Hong (Mississippi), Keith Calhoun & Chandra McCormick (Louisiana), Marielle Plaisir (Florida) and Fletcher Williams III (South Carolina)
