Opera Scenes Program

Sunday, November 13, 2022 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

UCF Opera Workshop Students will be performing six scenes in their annual “Opera Scenes” program.

"We’ll start with two scenes from Purcell’s Baroque opera “Dido and Aeneas” (first performed in the 1680s). The story is based on a portion of Virgil's Aeneid, and tells of the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her.

Then we will present two scenes from Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”. This opera is from the “Classical” compositional period (first performed in the 1780s) and is based on the legendary story of Don Juan. Our scenes will give a glimpse into the amorous pursuits of this philanderer – but they’re all “PG” rated, we promise!

Our final two scenes come from the 20th-century opera by Douglas Moore, “The Ballad of Baby Doe”, which premiered in the 1950s. The opera is set in Leadville, Colorado, and we think you’ll love the wholly American flavor of the music and its characters.

All our scenes will be performed in English this year and accompanied by piano, harpsichord, and cello." - Thomas Potter, UCF Opera Director

Come and support these future opera singers and opera educators as they bring to life the music-theater of the ages!
