Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga

Friday, February 10, 2023 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Central Florida Society of the Archaeological Institute of America is delighted to present the 2023 Joukowsky Lecture.

Dr William Fitzhugh (Smithsonian) will discuss "Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga" on February 10 at 7pm on UCF's main campus (room to be announced).

His lecture will trace the history and archaeology of the Vikings from their origins in the 7th century, their rise to power and raids in Europe, and their expansion across the North Atlantic to Iceland, Greenland, and eventually to mainland North America at the L’Anse aux Meadows site in northern Newfoundland. A special feature of the lecture is Viking contacts with Native American Indians and Inuit as seen in archaeological finds in recent years. The story will include illustrations from the Smithsonian’s ‘block-buster’ exhibition honoring the 1000th anniversary of Leif Erikson’s encounter with North America and its catalog publication with the same title as this lecture.

This event will be held in-person, but a streaming link will be available for those who need it. Please email alison.hudson@ucf.edu for more information and the link.
