SPRING COLLOQUIUM: Dr. Fenglin "Maple" Peng '17PhD, META Reality Labs

Friday, March 10, 2023 11 a.m. to noon

Title: Liquid Crystal for VR

Abstract: Liquid crystals (LCs) have been widely used in display applications. Beyond displays, LCs are also attracting wide interests due to its unique optical properties and self-organizing nature. These together enable highly efficient and practical flat optics. In this talk, I will review the basics of LC optics and present the recent advancements in Virtual Reality (VR) displays and viewing optics based on LC optical elements, in order to enable glasses-like form factor, high efficiency, better image quality and user comfort.

About the Speaker: Dr. Fenglin Peng is a tech-lead manager, research scientist at Reality Labs Research, Meta (formerly Facebook). She has been working on novel optics and display systems to enable future AR/VR glasses. She is the recipient of the 2023 SPIE Early Career Achievement Award. She has served as a committee member for SPIE Photonics West and SID (the Society for Information Display) and has given multiple invited talks in SPIE, SID and OSA. She has co-authored one book chapter, over 50 journal and conference papers, and >50 patents. She received her PhD degree from College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL), UCF in 2017 and bachelor’s degree from Zhejiang University.
