Each spring, the UCF History Department hosts the Pauley Lecture Series on Global Affairs, an annual event that invites engaging speakers to share their perspectives with students. At this year’s lecture Dr. Jennifer Palmer will present her work, "To Have and to Hold: Race, Gender, and Property in the French Atlantic World."
Dr. Palmer is a historian at the University of Georgia. Her work focuses on Early Modern France, the Atlantic World, and the Caribbean. She teaches courses about Europe, the Atlantic world, women and gender, race, and pirates.
Dr. Palmer's current project, “Possession: Race, Gender, and Property in Atlantic France,” argues that property ownership emerged in the context of the growth of the plantation system as a white male privilege. In this work, she examines the ways women, especially women of color, exerted control over property, and how those opportunities were taken away. She has also published work on representations of gender and race.
