Title: Lasercom to Enable Proliferated Space Networking

Abstract: Space communications is rapidly transforming with the addition of thousands of satellites over the last five years. SpaceX alone has launched over 4,000 satellites with the goal of providing internet across the globe. Laser communications are playing a critical role in this transformation.

This talk will cover the landscape that has allowed for this space revolution, how new space communication systems differ from traditional systems, and what capabilities these new satellites possess. Lastly, I’ll discuss some of MIT Lincoln Laboratories efforts towards realizing space-based laser communications.

About the Speaker: Rachel Sampson '19MS is a member of the technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in the Advanced Lasercom Systems and Operations Group. Her research focuses on the design, prototyping, and analysis of laser communication systems. She is a recipient of the Order of Pegasus, the University of Central Florida’s most prestigious student award, and the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
