The thesis covers an analysis of the three-month rehearsal process and eight public performances of Paula Vogel’s Indecent at Theatre UCF, directed by Julia Listengarten, in the role of Otto/Elder, at the University of Central Florida. Vogel dramatizes the censorship of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance on Broadway, reflecting the pressures of assimilation and cultural erasure faced by immigrant artists, and the challenges of intolerance and the artistic representation of marginalized communities. I applied Stanislavski’s System and action analysis to create dynamic and living characters, defined specific oral postures using Knight-Thompson Speechwork and dialect acquisition resources from Ginny Kopf and Nancy Houflek, utilized David Hammond’s image structuring tools to score and embody the text, and incorporated Michael Chekhov’s Psychological Gesture into the gestural vocabulary and shifts between characters.
Intense performance experience and use of research methods and training are what constitutes the three-year training program for this Musical Theatre Grad student.
