MAE Seminar Series -- 3D Flow Visualization

Friday, April 21, 2023 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Join the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for the final lecture of the Spring Seminar Series. This week, Brian Thurow of Auburn University will speak on 3D Flow Visualization.

Many flow fields of practical interest are inherently unsteady and 3-D, yet traditional flow diagnostics are typically limited to 1-D and 2-D measurements limiting our ability to experimentally investigated these flow fields. This seminar will focus on the use of a plenoptic (or light-field) camera to measure instantaneous 3D flow information using a single camera. A plenoptic camera is unique in that it records both the position and angle of light rays captured by the camera’s lens. This 4D description of a scene, also called the light-field, allows for the application of computational methods to render new and original images of the scene, such as refocused views and views from new perspectives. The integration of plenoptic camera with particle image velocimetry (PIV), background oriented schlieren (BOS), chemiluminescence and multi-spectral imaging will be discussed.

All UCF faculty and graduate students are welcome to attend.
