Integrated AI Systems for Translational Biomedicine

Wednesday, May 3, 2023 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Speaker: Dr. Laura Brattain

From: MIT Lincoln Laboratory

Abstract

With the rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI), biomedical AI is poised to transform healthcare at scale. To spearhead the translation from bench to bedside, we need to go beyond standalone AI algorithms but instead endeavor to develop integrated systems with AI as one of the core components. In this talk, I will begin with an overview of AI for biomedicine, followed by a discussion of integrating clinical knowledge, robotics, AI, and medical ultrasound to build field forward platform technologies and empower less specialized users. One of the examples I will show is a handheld ultrasound-guided interventional device, AI-GUIDE (Artificial Intelligence Guided Ultrasound Interventional Device), which is capable of directing users with little ultrasound or interventional expertise to catheterize a deep blood vessel. AI-GUIDE is a multidisciplinary effort. It won the 2021 R&D 100 Award as well as MIT Lincoln Laboratory Best Invention Award, and is currently being commercialized. I will conclude the talk with an outlook for the future of biomedical AI.
