An alumnus of The Burnett Honors College, Dr. Josiah Baker (’94) was recently presented the Morris Rosenberg Award for outstanding sociological achievement by the Washington DC Sociological Society for his book “Religion, Politics, and Polarization: How Religiopolitical Conflict Is Changing Congress and American Democracy.” Published in June of 2013, the book provides a sociologic examination into how religious affiliations of elected government leaders shape the decisions they make while in office.
Relevant to issues currently making headlines such as abortion, homosexuality, defense spending, taxes, and welfare spending, the book draws on political votes surrounding each of these popular issues in order to argue that religious differences have created ideological division within Congress.
Baker currently holds the high honor of being an endowed professor at Methodist University and also serves as the Director of the University’s School of Business Undergraduate Thesis Program. His educational background from UCF includes Bachelor of Arts degrees in History, Political Science, Economics and Interdisciplinary Studies as well as a Master’s degree in Economics.
