MSE Candidate Lecture -- Alexis Maurel

Friday, March 8, 2024 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Title: Shaping Sustainable Energy Storage Solutions with 3D Printing and Collaborative Frontiers

Abstract: In this presentation, an overview of Alexis Maurel’s background, multidisciplinary expertise, research goals, current and future research on the topic of advanced energy storage systems and its alignment with the UCF’s Resilient, Intelligent, and Sustainable Energy Systems (RISES) cluster, will be discussed.

Bio: Alexis Maurel is a Research Assistant Professor in the Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at El Paso. Maurel is currently working on projects related to the advanced manufacturing of energy storage devices, including all-solid-state lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), the European Office of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), and the U.S. Army Research Office. Maurel’s multidisciplinary research (combining mechanical engineering, materials chemistry, electrical engineering, and electrochemistry) aims to fully understand the limits of current lithium-ion battery systems (geometry/performance/sustainability/safety), and develop efficient, adaptive, tailored, and environmentally friendly manufacturing solutions. Maurel received the BS in Materials Chemistry in 2015 from Université Toulouse III (France). In 2017, Maurel received the MS in Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion from a joint Erasmus Mundus program with Politechnika Warszawska (Poland), Universidad de Córdoba (Spain), Université Toulouse III (France), and Université de Picardie Jules Verne (UPJV), (France). Maurel completed the PhD in Materials Chemistry and Electrochemistry in 2020 at UPJV, on the topic of 3D printing of lithium-ion batteries, for which he received the 2020 Best PhD Thesis Prize. In 2021, as a recipient of the Fulbright France Scholar award, Maurel joined the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at El Paso, first as a Fulbright Scholar/Postdoctoral Researcher, and now as a Research Assistant Professor. Maurel received in 2022 the Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award from the Electrochemical Society (ECS), and was finalist of the 2023 NSF Manufacturing Blue Sky Competition.
