The Neil Euliano Chair in Italian Studies is proud to present the screening of The Door to Hell/La porta dell’inferno by Michael Cavalieri.
This powerful documentary tells the story of the courageous men who worked in the sulfur mines of central Sicily. Through firsthand accounts from the last surviving miners, the film reveals the grueling, slave-like conditions they endured under private ownership until 1963. At its core is their unwavering will to keep their families together, choosing the brutal mines over emigration as their only option.
Following the screening, the writer and director, Michael Cavalieri, will engage in a Q&A session to share insights into his work.
Michael Cavalieri is an actor, writer and director originally from New York. He made his acting debut alongside Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank in Columbia Pictures’ The Next Karate Kid. Since then, he has appeared in several feature films, including Walter Hill’s Last Man Standing, starring Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken. Cavalieri has also made guest appearances on numerous hit TV shows.
This is a free event sponsored by the Neil Euliano Chair in Italian Studies, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Miami, and the Department of Modern Languages and Literature.
Refreshments will be served after the lecture.
