In the Eyes of the Hungry: Florida's Changing Landscape

Friday, April 7, 2017 10 a.m. to Friday, April 14 at 10 p.m.

Lobby passes will be available at noon on March 8.

Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read and inspired by John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, In the Eyes of the Hungry: Florida’s Changing Landscape inspires and contributes to conversations about demographic, geographic, and ecological shifts, with an emphasis on human relationships with the environment. The selected artists, which include School of Visual Arts and Humanities faculty Hadi Abbas, Brooks Dierdorff, and Lisa Mills, provide immediate yet transcendental responses to Florida’s landscape and explore ideas ranging from agriculture and industrialization to migration and tourism to ecology and conservation.

Whether responses to urban development, environmental degradation, or migrant labor, the collected works present viewers with dynamic and haunting images of Florida’s unique and changing landscape.

The exhibition was curated by Keri Watson, Assistant Professor of Art History in the School of Visual Arts & Design. The accompanying catalogue features essays and poetry by Connie L. Lester, Associate Professor of History and Director of RICHES, and Terry Ann Thaxton, Professor and Program Director of UCF’s MFA in Creative Writing.
