India's Quest for Technology

Thursday, January 30, 2025 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

India has, since its Independence in 1947, been interested in a mastery of technology for security, governance, and growth. But its journey was often frustrated, from its early endeavors in the nuclear realm to half-baked attempts at electronics in the 1970s and 1980s. The period after that saw some unusual successes, including the growth of a software industry, public transportation, and a digital revolution in the 2000s. Today, it confronts a pressing need to get ahead in multiple areas including in semiconductors, telecommunications, automation, space, defense, cybersecurity, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence. What are the new - and different - approaches India has now adopted, and what are the continuing opportunities and challenges it faces?
