An Introduction to Rugged Micropower

Wednesday, January 29, 2025 10 a.m. to noon

Join us for the Electronic Parts Engineering for Space and Defense speaker series as we welcome Paul Shepherd, Ph.D., founder of Rugged Micropower Inc.

ABSTRACT: In this seminar, Rugged Micropower founder Paul Shepherd, Ph.D. will discuss power
management devices optimized for commercial low-earth-orbit applications. The presentation will touch on industry trends and his experience which led to founding Rugged MicroPower. If there is time, there will be community discussion of related topics such as a lunar microgrid and entrepreneurship within the space industry.

PAUL SHEPHERD, PH.D. received his doctorate from the University of Arkansas in 2014, where his work centered on mixed-signal circuit design in emerging silicon carbide (SiC) CMOS processes and design of RHBD circuits. From 2017-2022, he worked for Benchmark Space Systems, where he led the development of avionics and software. In 2023, he founded Rugged MicroPower to provide power management solutions for space applications.

His research interests include integrated power electronics, 3D heterogeneous integration, radiation effects in wide bandgap devices, and microgrids.STEM mentorship and outreach has been an important pillar of Shepherd’s academic and industry career and worked with Ed Suh on hardware security. He is generously supported by a Stanford graduate fellowship and a Meta Ph.D. fellowship in AI SW/HW co-design.
