The Geoeconomics in India’s FTA Strategy

Monday, March 2, 2026 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Join The India Center at UCF for this talk by Amitendu Palit, Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow & Research Lead, Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore

The last three years mark a decisive change in India’s FTA strategy. Shedding the inhibition and reticence of the last decade, India has begun pursuing an aggressive FTA policy. This has led to its signing new trade agreements with a large number of partners: Australia, UAE, Oman, New Zealand, UK and most recently the EU. What explains this robust engagement in FTAs? The talk will introduce the geoeconomic motivations behind the strategy, including the priorities to diversify and de-risk; access critical resources; build new capacities in strategic sectors; and contribute to rulemaking on 21st century trade issues. In the wider context of the current global geopolitics and India’s national interests, the talk will reflect on the impact of the FTA strategy on India’s geoeconomic capacity to influence external policies in its favour.

Lunch provided.
