Survivor Homicide: Then and Now

Monday, March 2, 2026 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Many students, faculty, and staff have been personally impacted by the criminal justice system — whether directly or through family, friends, or community. Join us for the first spring Lived-In Experience Speaker Series featuring David Garlock — a successful returning citizen, criminal justice reform advocate, TEDx speaker and actor in Just Mercy.

During this powerful presentation, Garlock will examine how courts historically treated survivors of sexual abuse or trafficking solely as offenders — often resulting in long, harsh sentences — compared with more recent cases recognizing individuals as both victims and offenders and issuing more trauma-informed outcomes. He will also share the story of the Garlock Brothers, comparing their experiences with the Menendez case to illustrate how two sets of brothers endured abuse but received very different legal outcomes, including the Garlock Brothers’ 25-year sentences, eventual parole and full pardon from the state of Alabama.

Join a meaningful conversation that challenges perspectives, deepens understanding and highlights the human impact of justice system reform.

This speaker series session is available in person or virtually.
