The Euthanasia Euphemism: On the Use of "Euthanasia" in Animal Research Protocols

Thursday, February 26, 2026 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"Millions of healthy animals are killed each year in research labs under the label "euthanasia." The term implies a humane death for a humane reason, but this euphemism leads to the killing of healthy "unwanted" animals. This talk examines how a misleading term obscures an ethical tension in animal research and distorts public understanding.

His work has been published in the Journal of Value Inquiry, Ethics & Environment and Between the Species, and has been applied as a Peace Corp Volunteer, Coach of Loyola's Ethics Bowl Team, ethicist on Loyola's Institutional Review Board, and field research on a USAID-funded green iguana conservation project.
