Kent Family Speaker Series: Dr. Sophie Bjork-James – Reproductive Futures in an Age of Climate Collapse

Thursday, April 2, 2026 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Presentation: Reproductive Futures in an Age of Climate Collapse
Speaker: Dr. Sophie Bjork-James (Vanderbilt University)

This talk explores how young people come to understand and misunderstand climate change. Drawing on 250 college students interviews, Dr. Bjork-James reveals that although many young people are aware of climate change, some fail to understand it as an ongoing issue. In the coming decades, as Generation Z moves through their reproductive years, they will face increasing rates of natural disasters and other disruptions linked to escalating climate change, making climate issues increasingly central to reproductive politics. Dr. Bjork-James will highlight the diverse ways young people learn about and misunderstand climate change and examine how these perceptions are shaped by what she refers to as “life politics.”
