There is no doubt that homelessness is a serious social problem in the United States, yet there is relatively little information describing the experiences of violence among this population. Homelessness can be the adaptive response of women to battering or other abusive situations and there is reason to believe that the cycle of violence and the cycle of homelessness are the same cycle for at least some women. This talk will consider the implications of the intersection between homelessness and violent victimization.
Jana L. Jasinski, Ph.D. is the Interim Vice Provost for Faculty Excellence, a Pegasus Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean in the College of Sciences at UCF. Her research interests focus primarily on the areas of lethal and non-lethal interpersonal violence with an emphasis on intimate partner violence, substance abuse, and institutional responses to violence.
Her research appears in journals including Child Abuse & Neglect, Violence Against Women, Violence and Victims, Social Science Quarterly, and the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, among others. She has received several grants from the National Institute of Justice, the most recent of which resulted in the co-authored research monograph Hard Lives, Mean Streets: The experience of violence in the lives of homeless women.
