The panel discussion will offer insight on the political climate across the Middle East, focusing on alliances across the Middle East, how relationships amongst nations in the region have changed and evolved in recent years, and how alliances may be impacted under the Trump administration.
Dr. Paul Salem holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and is senior vice president for policy analysis, research and programs at The Middle East Institute. Prior to his position at The Middle East Institute, Salem was the founding director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut,
Lebanon. He is an expert on Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran and focuses on issues related to social & economic policy, U.S. foreign policy, security, democracy & governance, and civil society & human rights. In addition, Salem is a musician and composer of Arabic-Brazilian jazz.
Dr. Gönül Tol holds a Ph.D. from Florida International University and is the founding director of The Middle East Institute’s Center for Turkish Studies. She also serves as an adjunct professor at George Washington University’s Institute for Middle East Studies and has also instructed courses at the College of International Security Affairs at the National Defense University. She is an expert on Turkey with issue expertise in political Islam, Islamist movements, immigration, ethnic and religious identity formation, the role of identity in foreign policy making, social movements and their radicalization process, as well as Muslim populations in Western Europe.
