About the Speaker

Sampath Parthasarathy, Ph.D., MBA, is an internationally known cardiovascular scientist who holds the UCF College of Medicine’s Florida Hospital Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Sciences and Professor of Medicine at the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, and was Associate Dean for Research from 2013-2017.

Before joining the College of Medicine, Dr. Parthasarathy held the Klassen Chair of Cardiac Surgery and Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University, where he was also a professor of Internal Medicine and Human Nutrition.

Dr. Parthasarathy is a recognized expert in lipids and lipoproteins, credited with the codiscovery of a major cardiovascular concept—the fact that oxidized LDL cholesterol blocks arteries in the heart, leading to atherosclerotic diseases. His areas of interest include arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular nutrition and heart failure. His work led to the expectations that antioxidants and monounsaturated fat might be useful in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Parthasarathy has a breadth of research experience, including studies on endometriosis, aspirin therapy and heart disease related to diabetes. The National Institute of Health (NIH) funds his work extensively. He has authored more than 225 publications and a book on atherosclerosis. He has also received more than 23,000 citations of his research findings. Dr. Parthasarathy belongs to an elite group—consisting of the top fraction of one percent—of the most highly cited authors worldwide in his field, as designated in Highly Cited Researchers. He has received numerous awards, including a special recognition award by the American Heart Association.

Dr. Parthasarathy received his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science and did post-doctoral training at the Kyoto University-Japan, Duke University and the University of Minnesota. In addition to Ohio State, he has served at the University of California-San Diego, Emory University and Louisiana State University.
