Leadership Week: How to Get Started Volunteering / Building Your Resume Now for your Future Tomorrow

Tuesday, February 20, 2018 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Speaker: Persis Mistry - This presentation focuses on various routes students can take to build themselves up for their future career path. Due to the highly competitive nature of today's career and job market, it is important to brand yourself and stick out against others in order to land your spot. There are roughly 70-100 people competing for a single seat in graduate programs and medical schools today. This presentation is applicable for students in the formative stages of trying to build experience, maximize resume space, and ask questions along the way. Whatever your final goal is whether it be graduate programs, medical school, PT school, etc, the preparation for these programs starts today. The steps you take today will matter later on and often times we prolong this process because we are unsure of where to begin, or have questions regarding which route is best to take for our specific career goals. However, one of the most prominent ways in today's day in any field that boosts our advantage, is experience. Experience is something that can set us apart from our competitors, however, it can be daunting to attempt to go out and pursue as we are overwhelmed by options and unsure of which route will reap the most benefits. This specific presentation will focus on viable, simplistic methods that can be performed by students to maximize their undergraduate experience for that "next step" of their life.

As a LEAD Scholars Alumna with a Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences from the University of Central Florida Ms. Persis S. Mistry has been a volunteer in the health care industry for over a decade. She is also the recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in Volunteer Service. In this time, she has witnessed the rewarding nature that comes along with a volunteer service position and how it can be used as a resume booster for further career advancement as well as implementing it as a differentiating factor for graduate and medical programs. As a first generation college student she was often lost in regards to who to go to and where to start. Her journey started when she was admitted into FSU’s prestigious medical outreach program. At the young age of 14 she was already witnessing cancer removal surgeries, brain, and open heart surgeries. She has had the privilege of serving under over 15 different health care professionals. Outside of medicine she has also donated her time to groups like BoysTown, Hooves for Humanity, Junior Achievement and many more.

She is now here to share her knowledge with you about how volunteer service can boost you into the next level for your career. Your formative years are now and what you are doing now greatly impacts your career plans for tomorrow.
