The Crisis of Decolonization in the Belgian Congo

Join Dr. Walker as he explores post-independent conflicts in the Congo, culminating in the Congo Crisis. Congo's First prime minister, Patrice Lumumba attempted to maintain the country's borders as two of the riches provinces seceded from the county. Without help from the United Nations, Lumumba allegedly sought assistance from the Soviet Union, creating a flashpoint in the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Congo Crisis continued until 1965 when Mobutu seized power and began a 30 year dictatorship.
