Research Presentation: Dr. Guillermo Rebollo Gil

Wednesday, March 21, 2018 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Department of Philosophy will be conducting on-campus interviews for potential candidates for a tenure-track professor position within the Humanities program. Part of the on-campus interview process will have candidates giving a research presentation that is open to students to attend and provide feedback to the department. Please join us for the research presentation of Dr. Guillermo Rebollo Gil, titled "Citizen in the Colony: An Americanish Lyric."

Abstract:
In this talk, I will offer a critical—and rather biased—reading of the present moment in Puerto Rico, as it relates to the island-colony’s place within the American imagination. In particular, this talk will focus on the interplay of colonial and racial dynamics in the post-hurricane María context of increased migration of Puerto Ricans to the U.S. and increased interest in the mainland on island affairs. To do so, I will draw on a willful selection of recent events, grassroots activism, literary texts and personal anecdote.
