The university community is invited to attend a retirement celebration for Dr. José Fernández on Thursday May 3, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the Pegasus Ballroom at the Student Union.
Dr. Fernández began his career at UCF as a professor of history and foreign languages. He went on to serve as chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He became UCF’s first Hispanic dean in 2006 and served as dean of the College of Arts and Humanities until 2016. He is currently serving as interim dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs.
In 2001, Dr. Fernández was named a Pegasus Professor, UCF’s highest faculty honor for extraordinary teaching, research and service. Dr. Fernández gained national recognition for his work in Latin American history and culture when former President George W. Bush appointed him to serve on a 23-member commission to explore the potential of creating a national museum dedicated to American Latinos.
