The fall 2014 Symposium The Federal Budget: Making Tough Choices will focus on the necessary information and background to understand the budget process. Any budget discussion can prove to be a challenge, but this Symposium will examine the issues the President’s Budget Supercommittee could not solve. Those include entitlements, defense, deficits and taxes. Congressman Lou Frey will lead a panel discussion and debate of these issues with Congressman Jason Altmire (D-PA, 2007-2013), Congressman Allen Boyd (D-FL, 1997-2011), Reverend John Allen Newman, Congressman Cliff Stearns (R-FL, 1989-2013), and Congressman Tom Tauke (R-IA, 1979-1991). A budget exercise, led by the Concord Coalition, will take the attendees, AP and Honors high school students as well as members of UCF’s Learning Institute for Elders, through a budget balancing simulation. The panelists will rotate around the room from table to table working with the multigenerational audience as they tackle the budget and learn firsthand why balancing the budget isn’t easy.
