How do people reconcile (a) their rights to do as they please, with (b) their responsibilities for adherence to norms of conduct? This brown bag session focuses on two different motivational “forces” in that regard. Psychology routinely invokes one—the expected-value consequences of behavior. The other has not received as much attention—the “value” of a behavior in-and-of-itself. Some preliminary research results will illustrate this distinction and its relevance to decision-making/choice situations.
