Research Computing and Data Workshop Series: Advanced Research Computing Center: GPU-based High-performance computing using UCF Newton computing cluster (hands-on)

Monday, March 15, 2021 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

New in 2021! We are pleased to bring to the UCF Research community a series of workshops on scientific computing and research data management. These workshops are being jointly presented by UCF LibrariesUCF Graduate and Research IT, and UCF Advanced Research Computing Center (ARCC) and will feature some guest speakers from the broader research community. This series also includes Software and Data Carpentries workshops (http://carpentries.org) which have been made possible through the sponsorship of Dr. Elizabeth Klonoff, Vice President for Research and Dean, College of Graduate Studies.

The workshops are targeted to faculty, post-docs and student researchers and will be especially useful for those who are new to computational science and interested in learning about the resources available to them at UCF and beyond. Topics span the areas of research data management, high-performance computing, and programming for scientific analysis and will feature some sessions with hands-on learning.

The March 15 session details are:

Title: Advanced Research Computing Center: GPU-based High-performance computing using UCF Newton computing cluster (hands-on)

Description:

Computational research can analyze models and/or data to reach new conclusions in faster ways or more complex scenarios. While UCF has a 4000+ core cluster for general-purpose computation for research across many fields of academic work, some fields of research can leverage Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to further increase computational speed; therefore, UCF also has a small, 20-node GPU computational cluster. This workshop will review capabilities of the UCF Advanced Research Computing Center in general, with a focus on the GPU cluster (known as Newton). Job submission using the GPU hardware will be covered with an interactive hands-on session (if an attendee does not yet have an ARCC account, please be sure to request an account ahead of time via the ARCC web site at arcc.ist.ucf.edu)

Presenters: Glenn Martin, Ph.D.
