Urban and Regional Planning Program’s Fall Distinguished Lecture Series

Wednesday, October 27, 2021 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The UCF Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning Program presents a two evening lecture series event on October 27 and 28, 2021 at 6 p.m.

Day One: Wednesday, October 27, 2021,at 6:00 p.m. ET,
Dr. Ayoung Woo presents a discussion on, "Who Believes and Why They believe: Rethinking of the Causal Direction of Subsidized Housing Impacts on Neighborhoods."

Description: Planners and policymakers have often faced a long-standing dilemma in providing subsidized housing for disadvantaged populations. Although subsidized housing policies have been implemented to address the affordable housing needs for the disadvantaged in many countries, subsidized housing developments often confront NIMBY attitudes due to the fear of negative impacts on neighborhoods. Along with subsidized housing policies in Korea and the USA, this presentation will address why people believe subsidized housing negatively affects neighborhoods. Also, we will talk about whether subsidized housing developments virtually decrease the quality of neighborhoods, or whether subsidized housing units are developed only in depressed neighborhoods.

Day Two: Thursday, October 28, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. ET,
Ms. Theresa Francois presents a discussion on, "Unconscious Bias."

Description: Are we on top of our biases, or might we be harboring some prejudices that lie outside of our awareness? This program will define unconscious bias and give us a framework in which to understand it. With numerous discussion opportunities, participants will explore biases, examine the conflict that arises between one's natural inclination to categorize and the conscious drive towards diversity, look at how unconscious bias is measured and identify ways to overcome these biases.
