Dr. María Elena Villar is an associate professor of the Department of Communication and Co-Director of the Steven Cruz Institute at Florida International University. She teaches courses in communication theory, research methods, multicultural communication, and advanced seminars in strategic communications.
Her research focuses on culturally competent communication for social and behavioral change, and on strategic communication for diverse audiences.
In her career as a researcher, Dr. Villar has focused on diverse topics that range from culture and communication, evaluation of program outcomes, and communication for social change. Many of her projects are based on community-based participatory research and use edu-entertainment and serious games.
Dr. Claire Connolly Knox is an Associate Professor in the Emergency Management program within the UCF School of Public Administration. She teaches Disaster Response and Recovery, Environmental Planning and Policy, Environmental Policy and Management, and Managing Emergencies and Crises courses.
Dr. Knox's interdisciplinary research applies a discursive theory lens to language underlying environmental and emergency management plans and policies and her academic interests include environmental vulnerability and disaster response, environmental policy and planning in coastal zones, and Habermas' critical theory.
Dr. Knox’s co-edited book, “Cultural Competency for Emergency and Crisis Management: Concepts, Theories and Case Studies” was published by Routledge in 2020 and received the 2021 Book of the Year Award from the American Society of Public Administration’s Section on Democracy and Social Justice. She has published in high-ranked journals including Public Administration Review, Environmental Politics, Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning, Administration & Society, Disaster Prevention and Management, and Risk Analysis.
