Presenter: Amanda Wilkerson, Urban Teacher Initiatives Program Director, UCF College of Education and Human Performance
Teaching in urban settings is a revered task requiring persistence, resilience, and hard work. Instructors engage in multi-layered processes, which entail connecting to the culture of the students and the school, engaging in rigorous academic practice, intertwining knowledge with "what works", and moving successively towards supporting student success. There are several dimensions which facilitate the holistic approach regarding student success. Most notably are the instructors, the student, and the community.
As such, in this presentation, participants will understand the urban education landscape as it relates to the Central Florida region. The grounding literature for this presentation includes the history of urban education, class issues in urban education, and transitions of students to learners. The aforementioned interrelated factors will reveal how student success is redefined as it relates to high-needs student populations.
