Expanding Vocabulary Knowledge and Oral Language Through a Comprehensive Approach (Grades K-6)

Thursday, April 25, 2024 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Longitudinal research shows that vocabulary and oral language abilities early on in preschool and kindergarten are some of the strongest predictors of reading achievement in grades three and beyond. Coupled with strong decoding and spelling abilities, vocabulary and language provide critical understandings for students’ knowledge-building and comprehension. Through an examination of instructional routines and practices from sight word vocabulary through academic- and discipline-specific vocabulary, Dr. Dana Robertson will present a comprehensive four-part approach to vocabulary instruction that intentionally considers vocabulary’s place in oral language development in K-6 classrooms.
