Designing Motivating Learning Modules with the ARCS Model

Thursday, October 22, 2026 11 a.m. to noon

Discover how Keller's ARCS Model of Motivational Design can strengthen student engagement in online courses. This workshop explores the four components — attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction — and demonstrates how they can be intentionally incorporated into Canvas modules. Participants will evaluate one of their own modules and identify practical, evidence-based strategies to improve student motivation and persistence.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to:

  • Explain the four components of Keller's ARCS Model and their relationship to student motivation in online learning.
  • Identify motivational strengths and barriers within an existing Canvas learning module.
  • Apply one evidence-based motivational design strategy to improve student engagement, persistence or satisfaction within a course module.

This workshop is limited to faculty, staff and GTA's only.
