The India Center and the Fulbright Association Mid-Florida Chapter present a discussion with Devon Newhouse, Ph.D., exploring the global influences that have shaped Goan cuisine through the history of feni, the first distilled spirit in India to receive a Geographic Indicator designation. While feni originated from distillation techniques predating the arrival of Europeans in India, the introduction of cashew by the Portuguese added a new ingredient for Goans to experiment with.
This talk will discuss methods in food studies that illuminate the global influences on Indian cuisine and funding opportunities, such as Fulbright, that make this research possible.
Moderated by Ty Matejowsky, Ph.D., professor and chair of UCF's Department of Anthropology.
Refreshments will be provided.
