Held at UCF each October since 2022 in partnership with the UCF Department of History, the Florida Historical Society Annual Meeting and Symposium brings together historians, students, and independent scholars to share research on Florida history. Featuring competitively selected academic papers, panel discussions, and the annual Shofner Lecture as the keynote, this conference provides a forum for scholarly exchange and engagement with Florida’s past.
This year’s Shofner speaker, Dr. Chambliss, will explore how Florida’s comic publishing history shaped American comic culture, revealing the state’s influence on visual storytelling, regional identity, and creative networks through the Comics as Data North America project.
Dr. Chambliss is a historian, author, and professor at Michigan State University whose work explores popular culture, comics, race, and digital humanities. He is co-editor of the award-winning Comics as Data North America project and a leading scholar of comics history and cultural studies.
