From Empire to Wall: Dye, Silence, and the Layers of Visual Culture in the City
This talk examines how Lisbon's colonial past is negotiated through contemporary mural art. Focusing on murals across the city, it asks who is represented, who remains absent, and which aspects of colonial history are made visible—or left unrepresented—on Lisbon's walls. At the same time, it questions what mural art can do as a form of intervention in public space: who has the authority to inscribe histories on the city's walls, and what possibilities for recognition, contestation, or repair might this create? By attending to both representation and absence, the talk considers how the reparative potential of urban visual culture can be enabled, constrained, or lost.
