"The truth is that after the impact and damage left by the horrific hurricane “María", celebrating the game in Puerto Rico would've been a great challenge due to the limitations that we're facing. That's why we looked for alternatives to celebrate this game, and we had the opportunity to do it in the city of Orlando, where there's a large Puerto Rican community that we know will enjoy this great match-up, plus all those Puerto Ricans who wish to travel to see their team face one of its eternal rivals," said Yum Ramos, President of the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation.
It was also announced that 20% of the event's net proceeds will be donated to the foundation 'United for Puerto Rico', as a contribution from the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation towards the island's recovery.
"We all need to do our part to rebuild Puerto Rico, and getting the sport up and running is an essential aspect. Our coaching staff and the players have a real commitment to our country and that's why we need the support of everyone during these difficult times”, said Puerto Rico National Head Coach, Eddie Casiano. “We all have a genuine and serious commitment to prepare for this first FIBA qualifying game that will be played off the island for obvious reasons. We would've loved to play in front of our fans and feel the warmth of our gym in Puerto Rico, but I believe that in Orlando we can count on the support of all Puerto Ricans that live there, while we bring joy and hope to our people.”
