Lunch and Learn with Theatre For Young Audiences

Wednesday, April 11, 2018 noon to 1 p.m.

The first-year Theatre for Young Audiences M.F.A. students invite you to their inaugural Lunch-and-Learn series! Bring your lunch and join us on Wednesdays from 12 pm – 1 pm as we explore a variety of topics - from taboo to to-do - in the world of Theatre for Young Audiences. Discussions will center around books, plays, and guest speakers. All sessions are first-come-first-serve, and space will be limited, so an RSVP is helpful. We will be meeting in PAC-Music room 143, the conference room in the music building. You bring your food and we’ll bring the conversation topics! We look forward to seeing you there!

Wednesday, March 21, 2018 – Faith in TYA, led by Bianca Alamo

  • In this lunch and learn, Laura Peete (Manager, School of Arts, Dr. Philips Center for Performing Arts) will join us as our guest speaker along with Matthew Silar (Director, Stage Manager, Chicago, IL) will speak upon “Faith in TYA”. Using the book Acting in Faith by Michael Kary as a lens, we will explore what it means to be a faith-based artist, how faith is talked about in TYA, and what work has been done and is currently developing within this realm.

Wednesday, March 28, 2018 – LGBTQ+ in TYA, led by Kate Kilpatrick

  • Theatre is often a safe space in which we can express individuality. How is the TYA field fostering a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth? In what ways is LGBTQ+ culture embraced in TYA? What has the response been within the TYA community and the audiences that it draws?

Wednesday, April 4, 2018 – Commercial TYA, led by Scott Savage

  • Is commercial theatre selling out, or can meaningful art happen in a commercial context? By looking at positive community impact, this session will help to discuss if or how the soul of an artist can be fed in corporate artistic work. Discussion will include a discussion of Tim Burton's autobiographical text "Burton on Burton".

Wednesday, April 11, 2018 – Shakespeare and TYA, led by Ralph Gregory Krumins

  • On April 11th The Lunch and Learn crew will be examining the illustrious bard William Shakespeare and his connection to youth and education. With support from the text “How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare” by Ken Ludwig, TYA lecturer Ralph Gregory Krumins will highlight techniques to share Shakespeare with young audience and the importance of embracing literature through memorization.

Wednesday, April 18, 2018 – Adaptations of Stories in TYA, led by Brittany Caine

  • What does it mean to take a beloved children's book and put it onstage? Why adapt, rather than developing an original story? By looking at several successful adaptations, Brittany will explore the benefits, struggles, and processes of telling an old story in a brand new way.
