On October 17, 2018, 12 p.m., join Deborah Carroll, Ph.D., as she presents, "Accelerating Entrepreneurship: Evaluating the Differences Between Nonprofit and For-Profit Enterprises Participating in Accelerator Programs."

Abstract: This paper uses data from the Entrepreneurship Database Program at Emory University to assess the extent to which there are systematic differences between nonprofit and for-profit applicants and participants in accelerator programs. Accelerator programs are generally fixed-term, cohort-based programs that include seed investment, networking opportunities, mentorship, education, and other activities aimed at promoting growth of young, startup entrepreneurial enterprises. With increasing competition among organizations in the nonprofit sector for resources to provide mission-supporting services, along with greater focus on social entrepreneurship, nonprofits are engaging in activities that help foster their competitive advantage, including participation in incubator-type accelerator programs. Such participation helps nonprofit managers learn the most effective ways to raise equity and leverage philanthropic support. With survey data from 2013 to 2017 that tracks ventures from application to accelerator programs through participation and post-program operation, this paper is able to determine whether there are any systematic differences between nonprofit enterprises and their private sector counterparts. The results of this study will ultimately help to guide decisions made by accelerator program managers, funders and investors, and other sector stakeholders regarding the ways in which nonprofit enterprises might be targeted and assisted to successfully gain a competitive advantage in their respective subsectors and therefore continue important mission-driven delivery of services.
