What contributes to the gender and racial wage gap? Across the state and country, women are being shortchanged by discriminatory workplace policies and practices. Overall, women in Florida make 87 cents for every dollar paid to men. That’s 7 cents higher than the national average. But that number doesn’t tell the whole story. Black women in Florida make just 61 cents for every dollar paid to a white man, and Latinas make just 60 cents. These numbers are both lower than the national average, and contribute to the fact that almost 15% of women in Florida live in poverty. Closing the gender wage gap doesn’t just mean more pay, it means that women - especially women of color - are more likely to be able to take care of themselves and their families, buy a home, pay for an education and build wealth. To commemorate Equal Pay Day, come hear experts from the National Women's Law Center discuss the causes of the gender and racial wage gap, and policies that states around the country are passing to close the gap and move us closer to equal pay.
