Difficult Conversations in Advising

Thursday, July 23, 2020 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The delivery of unwanted news to students in a clear, effective, and supportive manner can be challenging at times. How can advisors convey necessary information in ways that don’t cause students to turn away? How can we use empathy, helping skills, and confrontation skills in these situations? This discussion will focus on clearly communicating consequences, obstacles, realities, and options while maintaining a trusting relationship with our students.

Guest panelists from the UCF advising community will discuss best practices as it relates to difficult conversations in advising settings with UCF student populations. The May 21st NACADA webinar event “Blunt Empathy: Skills and Techniques for Delivering Unwanted News in Academic Advising Situations” is the foundation for this dialogue.

Register via Eventbrite: Zoom meeting link will be included with confirmation of registration.
