Bridging Literacy Gaps Through Multimodality: Leveraging Digital Tools to Enhance Student Access to Print Texts, Boost Engagement, and Improve Comprehension
This presentation will focus on using multimodal tools to provide equitable access to complex texts for students in grades 3-5 English Language Arts (ELA). By integrating digital tools like Learning Ally and student-led iPad research, teachers can reduce barriers associated with traditional print texts, and better support diverse learners, including students with various exceptionalities, ranging from intellectual disabilities to giftedness. These tools enable students with disabilities to engage in grade level discussions about complex print texts while fostering independence and acceleration for advanced students.
The session will emphasize the importance of student engagement with print texts to strengthen comprehension, focus, and critical thinking. Presenters will offer practical strategies to alleviate text related challenges, helping students grasp essential themes and develop deeper inferential understanding. Participants will leave with actionable methods for effectively combining print texts and digital tools to bridge knowledge gaps and promote literacy growth for all learners.
