One of the best ways to make the most of the UCF Climbing Tower is to become belay certified! This Climbing Tower-specific certification allows you to belay your friends while continuing to build your climbing skills.
The Process:
1. Take a belay class
Start with a belay class, where you'll learn the basics of belaying and climbing safety, including the belay method accepted at the UCF Climbing Tower. You'll also get to practice one-on-one with the UCF Climbing Tower staff.
Please wear comfortable athletic clothing. Long athletic pants are recommended but not required. You'll be required to climb during the class. If you have your own climbing equipment, we encourage you to bring it.
2. Pass the belay test
After demonstrating competency in the required safety and climbing skills, you'll complete a belay test. The test includes questions about the information covered in class and a skills test.
You must demonstrate all technical aspects of the UCF Climbing Tower belay procedure correctly to pass. If you don't pass the first time, you'll be required to retake the test before becoming certified.
3. Complete five belay check-offs
Once you've completed the class and passed the test, you'll need to complete five belay check-offs at the UCF Climbing Tower during normal operating hours. These check-offs ensure you can consistently and safely perform the UCF Climbing Tower belay procedure.
When you're ready to complete a check-off, let a Climbing Tower staff member know, and they'll help you get started.
4. Get your belay certification card
After completing all the steps, you'll receive your belay certification card. Be sure to bring it with you whenever you visit the Climbing Tower!
How To Register for a Belay Class:
Register for a belay class at the Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) Climbing Tower front desk during normal business hours. Students can take the stairs or elevators to the first floor, then go left. The desk is behind the stairs in the northeast corner of the main building.
Registration opens two weeks before each class, and participants must register at least 48 hours in advance. Space is limited to eight people per class.
Belay classes are free for current UCF students and RWC members with an active membership.
Need to cancel your registration? You must cancel at least 48 hours before the class to avoid a $30.00 forfeiture fee. No-shows for belay or climbing technique classes and late cancellations will also result in the fee.

Cancel your registration by visiting the Climbing Tower or the Outdoor Adventure Center during open hours, or by emailing outdoor@ucf.edu.
Fall 2026 Belay Classes:
- Friday, Sept. 11: Noon–2 p.m.
- Sunday, Sept. 27: 4–6 p.m.
- Friday, Oct. 2: 7–9 p.m.
- Sunday, Oct. 18: 4–6 p.m.
- Friday, Nov. 6: Noon–2 p.m.
