The Past is Present: Diversity in the University Archives at UCF

Wednesday, October 17 from 11:00am-12:30pm

Course number: DIV397

Facilitator: Mary Rubin, Kryslynn Collazo, Brandon Nightingale

Location: Barbara Ying Center, Room 140

Archivists seek to document, preserve, and organize the record of the broadest range of individuals, organizations and or communities while encouraging a diversity of viewpoints and ensuring the greatest access to the information by the public. Archivists also embrace identifying and working with communities to actively document those whose voices have been overlooked or marginalized.

UCF is committed to advocating for and ensuring the diversity and inclusion of its students, staff, and faculty. And the University Archives, the official repository of all aspects of life at the University of Central Florida, is committed to preserving the diverse history of UCF.

Brandon Nightingale will speak on his work in the archives related to researching the Black Student Union and fulfilling archives requests. The Black Student Union has been on campus since 1969 and is still an active organization today.

Kryslynn Collazo will speak on her work in the archives related to processing the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) Records. ODI has been a leading force in UCFs effort in building an inclusive culture for all students, faculty and staff by promoting diversity and inclusion practices and policies since 1994.

Mary Rubin will speak on her work in the archives related to responding and processing the Pulse Collection. The Pulse Collection contains ephemera left behind and materials from vigils and other events as UCF continues to remember and pay tribute to the 49 victims of the Pulse tragedy that happened in Orlando on June 12, 2016.
