M&S Seminar Series: Modeling and Simulation- Exploring its Application for Policy Analysis

Tuesday, March 17, 2015 11 a.m. to noon
Presentation Overview:In this session, we will first examine what policy analysis
is and the different domains in which it is conducted. We will also look at how
modeling and simulation has been used in policy analysis. Next we will explore
potential applications, potential barriers to its use, and how these barriers
may be overcome. Finally, we will look
at possible careers in this field.
Speaker Biography:
Janet Weisenford has over 25 years of experience in advanced
learning technologies including work in the Department of Defense and currently
in private industry as a Fellow with ICF International. She served as the first
Director of the Joint Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Co-Laboratory,
leading efforts to prototype e-learning including the development of the first
course to use the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM). While
employed by the U.S. Navy, Ms. Weisenford led interdisciplinary teams to
develop, evaluate, and implement new learning solutions, including research
projects in the use of gaming for training as well as the research regarding
the design of an authoring tool for tailored instruction. Since joining ICF in
2008, Ms. Weisenford has continued her work in advanced learning technologies. She serves as the Project Manager for the
Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Disaster Emergency Medical Personnel
System Virtual Learning Environment. She conducted a Virtual World Feasibility
Study to determine whether the current technology supported the VA’s training
needs. She is leading in the follow on effort to design training for delivery
in the virtual world. This work includes
determining ways to perform learner assessment in the virtual world for both
individual and team performance and also entailed leading a review of the
literature regarding training in the virtual world. Ms. Weisenford supported the Office of Naval
Research and the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division to develop
a Research and Development Agenda and Roadmap for Medical Modeling, Simulation
and Training. This effort examined gaps in capabilities to advance medical
simulation in the Department of Navy. Ms. Weisenford has received numerous
awards including the 2010 CELEBRATE Central Florida Modeling and Simulation
Leader in Modeling and Simulation Award. She recently was invited to serve on
the Industrial Advisory Board for the University of Central Florida’s Modeling
and Simulation graduate degree program.
She began her Federal career as a Presidential Management Intern in the
Office of the Secretary of the Navy. She holds a Master’s in Public and
International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh along with a graduate
certificate in National Security Studies.
